Gunmen Attack Government Official, Mogadishu

09/17/2017 (Somalia) - According to emerging social media reports on Sunday, 17 September, unidentified gunmen have carried out an attack against a government official in Mogadishu. The target of the attack was a senior intelligence official who was wounded as he travel through the city's Dharkenley district. At least one of the official's guards was killed during the attack. Whilst there has been no claim of responsibility for either incident, the Al-Shabaab militant group frequently carries out attacks against government and military interests within the city.

Travellers should be aware that Somalia is considered an extreme risk operational environment and, as such, all travel should be undertaken with the strictest possible risk management protocols in place. Clients should ensure that personnel and site security measures are continuously reviewed so as to remain commensurate to the prevailing local threat environment.
