Tropical Storm Maria Expected to Strengthen and Hit French Caribbean Territories on 18 September

09/17/2017 (St. Martin) - According to international media sources on Sunday, 17 September, tropical storm Maria is currently located 400 miles (640 km) east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles and expected to make landfall in the Leeward Islands on Monday, 18 September. Forecasters have measured current sustained wind speeds at 50mph (80kmh), but expect the storm to strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane by the time is makes landfall. As a result, a hurricane watch is in effect for Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, Guadeloupe, Saba, St. Eustasius, St. Maarten, and Anguilla, whilst a tropical storm watch has been issued for St. Lucia, Martinique, Dominica, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Those within affected areas are advised to closely monitor weather-related developments through local media and remain alert to any emergency directives issued by authorities, including evacuations. Clients are further advised to ensure they have access to a secure location in which to shelter with stockpiles of food and clean water.
