09/17/2017 (Somalia) - According to emerging social media feeds on Sunday, 17 September, at least four soldiers have been killed in an attack at a checkpoint 20km (12.4 miles) north of Beledweyne, capital of Hiran province. Even though no group has claimed responsibility for this attack as of yet, Al-Shabaab maintains an active militant presence in the area. There is no more information available at the moment.

Those in Somalia are advised to maintain a state of extreme vigilance given the multiple instances of suicide and vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attacks, mostly perpetrated by the insurgent al-Shabaab group. Any suspicious activity or items should be immediately reported to local authorities and non-essential overland movement should be minimised. Travellers should limit any time spent in the vicinity of likely targets for militant attacks, predominantly security personnel and establishments frequented by foreigners.
