Trade Unions and Opposition Groups call for Protests in Port-au-Prince

09/17/2017 (Haiti) - According to local media sources, public transport unions are calling for large protests to accompany a nationwide 24-hour strike scheduled to take place on Monday, 18 September. Additionally, opposition groups have called for further related protests to be held from 20 until 23 September in various suburbs of Port-au-Prince. Recent protests in Haiti have been known to erupt in violence.
Clients in Haiti are advised to remain clear of all large demonstrations and political gatherings in order to limit exposure to unruly crowd behaviour, opportunistic crime, and heavy-handed police response. Travellers should be mindful that peaceful protests can rapidly escalate into violence.
