Reports of Clashes between the Military and Unidentified Gunmen in Narino Department

09/17/2017 (Colombia) - According to local media sources on Sunday, 17 September, clashes erupted between an unidentified armed group and military troops in the vicinity of the rural municipality of Barbacoas, Narino department. Reports indicate that in the last few days, hundreds of people have been displaced by the combat; around 2,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in Narino this year. Narino department is the largest producer of coca leaf in the country. Marxist guerrillas and drug-trafficking paramilitary groups are known to operate in the area.

Those in Narino department are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and to remain apprised of any associated security operations. Travellers should be aware that armed groups continue to operate in various areas of Colombia and launch frequent attacks against security forces and government infrastructure. Those conducting travel outside of major cities in Colombia are advised to subject all journeys to a comprehensive localised threat assessment and liaise with local authorities to identify areas with active militant and security operations.
