09/17/2017 (Australia) - According to emerging local media reports on Sunday, 17 September, opposing demonstrations held by far-right and far left activists are currently being held in Melbourne city centre. The left-wing protesters, organised by the Campaign Against Racism and Fascism, gathered at the State Library and will march towards Parliament, where they are expected to confront an opposing demonstration. A large police presence has been reported in the vicinity of the protests, and the protests have remained largely peaceful so far.

Clients in Melbourne are advised to remain clear of all large demonstrations and political gatherings in order to limit exposure to unruly crowd behaviour, opportunistic crime, and heavy-handed police response. Travellers should be mindful that heightened tensions are likely and that peaceful protests can rapidly escalate into violence. Clients are advised that significant travel disruption is likely to occur in the surrounding areas due to increased security measures. Monitor local media sources for further updates.
