09/17/2017 (United States) - According to emerging local media reports on Sunday, 17 September, activists have gathered to protest at West County Mall in St. Louis, Missouri. The demonstrations are marching for a second consecutive day in condemnation of the acquittal of a police officer, Jason Stockley, who was accused of murder after fatally shooting an unarmed black civilian. A large police presence has been reported in the vicinity of the protests. The protest has remained largely peaceful so far, in contrast with the previous night's protest, which saw a number of injuries, dozens of arrests, and the use of pepper spray to disperse crowds.
Clients in St Louis are advised to remain clear of all large demonstrations and political gatherings in order to limit exposure to unruly crowd behaviour, opportunistic crime, and heavy-handed police response. Travellers should be mindful that peaceful protests can rapidly escalate into violence. Further protests held by the 'Black Lives Matter' movement are anticipated in St. Louis in the coming days. Monitor local media sources for further updates.
