09/16/2017 (Nigeria) - According to international media outlets on Saturday, 19 September, the country's Ministry of Defence has declared that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group is now classified as a terrorist organisation. The decision comes following unrest in Aba in Abia state and Jos in Plateau state which has seen violent clashes between security forces and demonstrators. Authorities in both areas have imposed curfews in an attempt to stifle further disturbances. It is currently unclear if either the National Security Adviser or Inspector-General of Police endorse the Ministry's classification and their support is required for an official prescription to occur.

Due to the risk of further unrest, those operating in areas that have seen protest held by or relating to the IPOB are advised to avoid the vicinity of such gatherings in order to avoid exposure to potential mob violence and heavy-handed crowd dispersal measures by security personnel. Clients are further advised to observe any directives issued by authorities in their area, including curfews.
