Multiple Arrested During Protests in Thembalethu, George

09/16/2017 (South Africa) - Reports from regional media sources on Saturday, 16 September, at least 13 people have been arrested after violence broke out during a protest in the Thembalethu area of George. The protesters were demonstrating the demolition of illegal shacks by vandalising construction and equipment as well as torching a building under construction. In addition, several roads were blocked with burning tyres.

Those in George are advised to avoid the Thembalethu area in the immediate term until the situation in the town has stabilised and roads cleared. Travellers should monitor local media sources for further updates on the unrest and associated disruption. Travellers are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings in South Africa due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, opportunistic crime and incidental violence as well as police crowd control and dispersal operations.
