09/16/2017 (South Sudan) - According to local media sources on Saturday, 16 September, nearly 30 aid workers with the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have been withdrawn from the Upper Nile State following continued clashes between rebels and government forces. It is reported that the rebel positions came under attack in the Aburoc area by government troops. Unconfirmed reports indicate that a camp for internally displaced people was also attacked, leaving at least ten fatalities and numerous casualties. These allegations have been denied by local authorities.

Clients in Upper Nile State are advised to exercise extreme caution given the risk of further fighting in the area and should review contingency and evacuation plans in case of a rapid deterioration in the local security environment. Travellers should monitor local media sources and liaise with in-country contacts for further updates on the situation in their particular area of operations and heed any directives issued by authorities. Travellers are advised to exercise caution when travelling outside of Juba due to the high risk of violent crime and military activity. All operationally-critical travel should be conducted in coordination with a trusted security provider following a comprehensive localised threat assessment.
