Reports of Explosion in El Wak, Gedo Region

09/16/2017 (Somalia) - According to emerging media reports on Saturday, 16 September, an explosion has been reported in El Wak, Gedo region, near the country's border with Kenya. The blast reportedly occurred in the vicinity of the city's police station as al-Shabaab militants reportedly attempt to take control of the area. Pro-al-Shabaab media has claimed that militants have seized the city, routing local security forces. Further information on the situation is awaited.

Travellers are reminded that Somalia is considered an extreme risk operational environment and, as such, all travel should be undertaken with the strictest possible security risk management protocols in place.
