Fatal Clashes between Militants and Security Forces Reported in Kupwara District, Jammu and Kashmir

09/16/2017 (India) - According to local media outlets on Saturday, 16 Saturday, at least two militants have been killed after they reportedly tried to enter India illicitly from Pakistan in the vicinity of Kupwara district, Jammu and Kashmir. The incident reportedly occurred at the Goutum border post when security forces detected the infiltrators and opened fire upon them. Security operations in the area are ongoing.

Travellers in the Kupwara district should be aware that arrests and other anti-militant operations in Jammu and Kashmir State frequently provoke localised unrest, occasionally spreading to larger scale protests across the territory. Travellers should heed any directives issued by security forces and local authorities and observe any extraordinary security measures that may be in place, including curfews.
