Demonstrators Block Access to Parliament, MPs Trapped Inside

09/16/2017 (Guatemala) - According to emerging social media feeds on Saturday, 16 September, hundreds of protesters have surrounded the parliament in Guatemala city, blocking all access to the building. At least 80 members of parliament remain trapped inside. An increased security presence has been reported in the area. Unconfirmed accounts state that paramilitary elements have infiltrated the demonstrations.
Those in Guatemala are advised to exercise a heightened level of situational awareness in the aforementioned areas and avoid demonstrations at all times even if considered peaceful as they can quickly escalate into violence and unruly crowd behaviour. Expect overland travel disruption during National Day and allocate extra time for travel within Guatemala.
