09/15/2017 (Nigeria) - According to local media sources on Friday, 15 September, at least 30 people were killed after two busses collided on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in the Elebolo Quarry area of Oyo state. It is reported that another 10 people sustained injuries during the crash. Whilst the details of the incident are not clear at this point, it is believed that the accident was caused by speed violations.
Overland travel in Nigeria is deemed quite hazardous. Roads are generally in poor condition and lack stop signs, street lights and functional traffic lights. Local motorists tend to drive recklessly and at excessive speeds and often refuse to yield the right-of-way to other drivers or pedestrians. Public transportation should also be avoided while in Nigeria. Buses are typically overcrowded, poorly maintained and often targeted by criminals. When road travel is necessary, travellers should rely only on chauffeur-driven cars which are readily available for hire through hotels and car rental agents.
