Rally to Protest Against Gender-Based Violence, Lilongwe

Category: Unrest

Severity: 2 (Low)

09/15/2017 (Malawi) - According to reports from local media sources on Friday, 15 September, up to several hundred activists staged a protest in central Lilongwe aiming to highlight growing concerns about gender-based violence. At least one arrest resulted from the incident, which otherwise remained peaceful, with a number of politicians partaking in the demonstration, a march from the Area 18 district of the capital towards the city centre.

Whilst the event passed without any significant incident, clients in-country are nevertheless reminded to remain vigilant if in close proximity to any form of political assembly. Even events intended to remain peaceful can rapidly deteriorate, and exposure to large crowds in unfamiliar environments carries with it the risks of encountering opportunistic criminality. As travel disruption in the vicinity of ongoing protests and other political gatherings can be expected, travel to locations where even peaceful protest activity is ongoing should be avoided unless essential.
