09/15/2017 (Bangladesh) - According to reports from local media sources on Friday, 15 September, demonstrators largely drawn from the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami political Islamist movement staged a protest march after Friday prayers condemning the alleged ethnic cleansing of the minority Muslim Rohingya population in neighbouring Myanmar. Other Islamist groups joined the march, which caused the closure of the main road leading north from the Baitul Mukarram Mosque in the Purana Paltan district of central Dhaka. The march occurred at around 1400hrs (0800 UTC), following afternoon prayers. The demonstration remained peaceful, though media reports indicate attendees burned images of Myanmar's political leadership, and all affected roads reopened by 1500hrs (0900 UTC).

Those in Bangladesh should monitor local media sources to remain apprised of any further demonstrations connected with events in Myanmar. Due to the prospect of unrest and overland travel disruption, clients are advised to avoid the vicinity of any protest. Clients should leave the area if a spontaneous demonstration develops in their area of operations, especially as unauthorised gatherings are likely to be dispersed.
