09/15/2017 (Somalia) - According to emerging reports from local social media users on Friday, 15 September, gunmen shot and killed two unidentified civilians in the southern port city of Kismayo overnight, in what appear to have been targeted assassinations. In a separate incident in the same city, a further two people were killed and an additional two injured after a landmine or improvised explosive device (IED) detonated. It is unclear if the device was unexploded ordnance (UXO) or a purposely-placed device. Whilst the identity of those killed has not yet been made public, local media reports have noted an increase in attacks, generally perpetrated by the insurgent militant group al-Shabaab, targeting local government officials.
Travellers are reminded that Somalia is considered an extreme risk operational environment and, as such, all travel should be undertaken with the strictest possible security risk management protocols in place. Clients should ensure that personnel and site security measures are continuously reviewed so as to remain commensurate to the local threat environment. All operationally-critical movement outside of secure compounds should be conducted in coordination with a reputable security provider and local authorities. Travellers should limit any time spent in the vicinity of likely targets for militant attacks, predominantly security personnel and establishments frequented by foreigners.
