09/15/2017 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - According to reports from local media sources on Friday, 15 September, unrest continues to persist in Butembo, North Kivu province, as local inhabitants protest against deterioration in local security conditions. Repeats of a large gathering condemning insecurity in the region that took place on 12 September are anticipated on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 September, which are likely to attract a robust response from security forces. During the rally on 12 September, gunfire and clashes between security forces and protestors were reported, though it is unclear if any fatalities resulted from the unrest. Protest activity in the DRC frequently leads to fatalities caused by clashes between security forces and demonstrators. At least 27 people were killed in a violent Kinshasa demonstration in early August.

Travellers are advised to monitor local media sources for further information on the incident and heed any directives issued by the authorities. Personnel operating in the DRC are advised to regularly review their crisis management plans and security measures to ensure they remain commensurate with the evolving local threat environment. Travellers are advised to remain well clear of all demonstrations and political gatherings due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and aggressive crowd control and dispersal operations. If a planned or spontaneous protest or gathering occurs in a client's area of operations, travellers should either seek to vacate the area immediately or else limit all non-essential movement
