09/15/2017 (Guinea) - According to local media sources on Friday, 15 September, the Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UDFG) political opposition group plan to stage large scale rallies in Conakry on 20 and 27 September. On 20 September, opposition supporters will march from the Bambeto roundabout to Stade du 28 Septembre. On 27 September, they will march from the Tannerie shopping centre to Stade du 28 Septembre. The demonstrations are reportedly being held in order to highlight a number of grievances, including delays in local elections, government contracts, and a potential third presidential term for incumbent Alpha Conde. Counter-demonstrations held by pro-government Union of Republican Forces may also take place.
Given the violence associated with recent unrest in the country, those in Guinea are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings due to the risk of exposure to potential incidental violence and police crowd dispersal operations. Travellers in Conakry should monitor local media sources to remain apprised of any unrest in their particular area of operations.
