09/15/2017 (Iraq) - According to international media sources on Friday, 15 September, at least 70 people have been killed and over 100 have been injured in a series of simultaneous attacks against a restaurant and a police checkpoint in the city of Nasiriyah and another restaurant on the main road linking the aforementioned city with Basra. Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for these attacks. Reports indicate that IS may be pursuing a protracted guerrilla conflict in the country following recent territorial losses in the region.

Clients in Nasiriyah are advised to maintain a heightened state of situational awareness due to the risk of similar incidents and heed any directives issued by security forces and local authorities. Those in Iraq should be aware that the country remains an extreme risk environment as attacks, IEDs, and unexploded ordnance continues to pose a significant threat. Travellers are advised that all travel should be undertaken on an operationally-critical basis only. Movements should be coordinated with security forces in conjunction with a localised threat assessment and strict security measures, including the use of armed security escorts.
