SOURCE:U.S. Department of State

U.S. Embassy Riga released the following Warden Message November 7, 2009:

This Warden Message updates previous information regarding human cases of 2009-H1N1 Influenza, sometimes referred to as swine flu or novel H1N1, and alerts U.S. citizens to the latest information. The Latvian Infectious Diseases Center has reported a total of 63 confirmed cases, including one severe case, for a total of 40 new cases since the last Warden Message on August 25, 2009. Ten new cases were confirmed on November 5 alone, an indication that the flu season is well underway. Local health authorities have informed the public that there is no readily available vaccine at this moment. The U.S. Embassy is not in a position to provide private American citizens with supplies, medications, or treatment in the event of a pandemic. Private U.S. citizens residing in Latvia should keep abreast of the latest medical guidance. There are still no travel restrictions at this moment, but caution is advised while traveling across land borders. The Latvian authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

American citizens should be aware that the U.S. Embassy in Riga cannot demand their immediate release if they have been detained or quarantined in accordance with local public health and legal authorities.

Any questions or concerns about influenza or other illnesses should be directed to a medical professional.

Please note that the U.S. Embassy in Riga is NOT advising Americans in Latvia to depart. At this time, the U.S. Embassy in Riga advises that Americans review the guidance provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization, and make their own decisions about whether to remain in Latvia.
