November 5, 2009. Government Warning Issued for Mongolia

U.S. Embassy Ulaanbaatar issued the following Warden Message on November 5:
This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens to the latest information regarding human cases of 2009-H1N1 influenza, sometimes referred to as novel H1N1 or swine flu. The Mongolian Ministry of Health has reported, as of November 5, 2009, 884 laboratory-confirmed cases. They reported 706 confirmed cases in Ulaanbaatar and 178 cases in 17 Aimags including Darkhan-Uul (23), Khovd (19), Selenge (18), Uvurkhangai (17), Dornogovi (17), Govisumber (16), Orkhon (13), Khentii (11), Dornod (11), Tuv (10), Arkhangai (8), Bulgan (5), Zavkhan (3), Bayankhongor (3), Umnugovi (2), Khuvsgul (1), and Uvs (1).
On November 3, the State Emergency Commission has declared a state of 'increased preparedness' for the next two weeks which includes several emergency measures aimed at curbing the spread of novel H1N1 in Mongolia. The most important measures include:
· Temporarily suspending all cultural and sports events.
· Closing disco clubs and merchandise markets. Please note that food markets, public catering places, and restaurants will continue to operate.
· Extending the school and kindergarten break until Nov 17.
· Passenger transportation services between cities and towns will be limited and domestic travelers will be subject to temperature screening.
· All scheduled conferences, seminars, and military call-ups will be postponed for two weeks.
· Health care services will be provided in the university and college campuses and dormitories.
· No meetings or seminars involving delegates from provinces shall be organized in Ulaanbaatar.
Due to legal restrictions and a lack of sufficient resources, the Embassy is not in a position to provide private citizens with pandemic-related supplies, medications or medical treatment, including vaccines, and cannot provide specific medical advice. Questions and concerns about influenza or other illnesses should be directed to a medical professional.
