June 24, 2009. Brazilian Authorities Tighten Measures on Flights from Argentina

SOURCE:Air Security International

On 23 June 2009 Brazilian authorities enacted strict measures for passengers arriving from Argentina after confirming that 40 percent of new patients infected with the A/H1N1 virus contracted the disease during travel in Argentina. Brazil currently has 240 confirmed cases of the A/H1N1 virus, commonly referred to as the swine flu. Argentine officials have confirmed a total of 1,294 infected persons and 17 fatalities as a result of the virus.

Airport personnel will hereafter screen all passengers arriving from locations in Argentina, while airlines will be required to provide detailed passenger lists, including telephone numbers and personal contacts. Any passenger displaying suspicious symptoms will be immediately quarantined. While the measures will be most heavily enforced at airports with a high degree of international traffic, they apply to all airports, maritime ports and border crossing points.

Brazilian health officials are also discouraging Brazilians from traveling to both Argentina and Chile, the two South American countries most affected by the A/H1N1 virus. Authorities are especially discouraging persons older than 60 years of age, those younger than 2 years of age and persons with weakened immune systems from travel to either country. Chile has registered seven fatalities and 4,315 official cases from the virus; however, authorities did not announce heightened health measures for travel to or from Chile.
