June 9, 2009. Government Warning Issued for Venezuela

The U.S. Embassy in Caracas issued the following Warden Message on 8 June 2009: "This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens to the latest information regarding human cases of H1N1 Influenza A, formerly known as swine flu. The Ministry of People's Power for Health and Social Protection in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has reported that there are twelve confirmed case of H1N1 Influenza A in Venezuela. These confirmed H1N1 cases in Venezuela were contracted outside of Venezuela or through close contact with the infected person. Official information about the cases and any other developments can be found on the Ministry's website: http://www.mpps.gob.ve/ms/."

"Local authorities have stated that there are no travel restrictions, although there are heightened immigration and customs controls along the Venezuelan borders, ports and airports. In addition, all travelers entering Venezuela are required to provide their travel itinerary information, a local Venezuelan address and contact information, and to state if they have any flu-like symptoms. The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has provided a toll free number through the Ministry of People's Power for Health and Social Protection where people can call for information on H1N1 flu: 0-800 (gripe00) or 0-800-474-7300. For updated information, U.S. citizens are advised to check the Embassy's website, listed below and monitor local media sources."
