It jumped nearly 150%, to 241,791, between 1996-97 and 2006-07, the latest year for which data is available, says the nstitute of International Education, a New York-based non-profit. The House and Senate each have introduced a bill this year that aims to boost that figure to 1 million in a decade.

Even if policies do promise reimbursement, travelers probably will have to pay any costs upfront for medical care, he said. Most insurance policies do not cover evacuation, which can easily run into the six figures," he said.
