RELIABILITY
The French emergency medical response service is called the SAMU (Service d'Aide Medicale Urgente). The call center is staffed by emergency physicians who evaluate the medical situation and dispatch the appropriate response team. In some cases, an ambulance with a doctor is dispatched, in other less serious cases, the ambulance will be staffed by a paramedic. The SAMU physician may spend a significant amount of time treating and stabilizing the patient at the site of the medical emergency, rather than automatically moving the patient to a hospital immediately. The SAMU dispatching doctor and the ground ambulance physician confer to determine the best hospital for the patient. Upon arrival to the hospital, the patient is admitted directly to the clinical unit responsible for his care, rather than undergoing extensive examination in the emergency department.
